UKCA implementation pushed back to 2023

August 2021

The introduction of a specific UKCA marking for personal safety kit (such as helmets, back protectors etc) that already have a CE mark, was guaranteed to cause more challenges for manufacturers, suppliers and retailers.

The original deadline of 1 January 2022 was unrealistic and there was considerable lobbying from every affected industry, including SIGB.

That lobbying has now resulted in a one year delay, so UKCA marking will only be mandatory from 1 January 2023.

This will be a relief for all organisations affected - giving time to properly plan and arrange for appropriate testing and new marking.

Lobbying will continue to argue for recognition of CE standards as equivalent, in order to avoid expensive duplicate testing.

The change was highlighted in national papers, including the Guardian
