As the Christmas shopping season begins, a number of outdoor brands are asking consumers to consider their purchases wisely over the coming Black Friday weekend. Members of the European Outdoor Conservation Association (EOCA) have come together to bring something good out of the over-indulgence traditionally associated with this time of year, offering instead ways of raising money to help fund vital conservation projects instead.
Eight EOCA members are running events, starting on 28th November, over the ‘Green Friday’ weekend and throughout December. Deuter, Gregory Packs, Nikwax UK, Söll and Terra Nova will all be donating a percentage of their online sales over the weekend, stretching from 28th November to 2nd December, to support EOCA’s work.
Nikwax Europe and Osprey Europe Ltd are both offering customers a discount on either all or specific items and will then be donating a percentage of profits from the weekend to the association. Finally Equip OutdoorTechnologies, owner of Rab and Lowe Alpine is helping to prolong the life of outdoor gear as well as supporting conservation through donating a percentage of their European Service Centre sales for the whole month of December to EOCA.
Tanya Bascombe, General Manager of EOCA commented,
“We want to turn the manic consumerism of Black Friday into a force for good, where people can consider their purchases more responsibly and think about either prolonging the life of their outdoor gear, or choosing items which, when purchased are having a positive impact in protecting our precious wild places”.
